Christ Healing the Sick (“The Hundred Guilder Print”)

Rembrandt Van Rijn
Christ Healing the Sick
Etching
c. 1649

Original etching with drypoint and burin printed in black ink on laid paper bearing a Strasbourg Lily watermark (fleur-de-lys in a crowned shield surmounting the letters “WR”) with the “IHS” surmounted by a Latin cross countermark [Ash/Fletcher 36.I.c]).

A superb 17th century/lifetime impression of Bartsch, Hind and Biorklund-Barnard’s second and final state, Usticke’s second state of five, New Hollstein’s second state of four, printed after the addition of the slightly curved diagonals shading the back and neck of the donkey at the right, but well before any of the posthumous retouching added by Captain William Baillie after he acquired the plate in 1775.

Bartsch 74 ii/ii;
