Signed in the plate with the artist’s monogram lower center.

A clear and clean, evenly printed 16th century/late lifetime Meder “d” (of “f”) impression, showing traces of the three long scratches to the girl’s right.

In 1778 the scholar H.S. Hügsen described this engraving as “The Intoxicated Lansequent and his Wife.”  In 1808 Adam Bartsch wrote that the man seems top be menacing the woman at his side.  However, in 1871 the scholar M. Allihn wrote that the “pair is about to step up to a dance and the man, far from scolding, is trying to make himself agreeable.
