Picasso was inspired by a postcard sent to him by the gallerist Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler (1884-1979). The card showed the painting “Vénus et l’Amour”, which is now in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. Picasso greatly admired Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) and decidedly preferred him to the Italian Renaissance painters.

Between 1975 and 1977, the Galerie Louise Leiris had an edition of 50 impressions printed at the Atelier Crommelynck, which was published in 1979.
