This etching is compositionally related to Motherwell’s 1969 painting “Open No. 97 (The Spanish House)”. The painting was inspired by the white façade of a house with orange shutters in a photograph of the harbor of Cadaques, Spain, that Motherwell came across in a book of color photographs of Spain.
