This lithograph was based on elements derived from subjects that were published in the 1967 album Sur la Terre des Dieux (In the Land of the Gods).  The point of departure for this lithograph is the key stone from the plate “Love is a god” (Mourlot 532) from that album.  The spirit of the composition has been totally transformed; the angel in the earlier plate has become a trapeze artist, and the old man from earlier has become a motley clown.  In this composition Chagall for only the third time employed the use of imitation cut-outs, a technique which he went on to use fairly often from this point.
