Major Toulouse-Lautrec Exhibition
The Museum of Modern Art in New York has just opened a major exhibition of the graphic works of Toulouse-Lautrec. Titled “The Paris of Toulouse-Lautrec: Prints and Posters,” it features over 100 of the daring creations that have come to epitomize life in the Belle Époque era. The exhibition, which will run through March 22, 2015, is the museum’s first in 30 years to feature only the art of Lautrec.
Though small in stature, Lautrec’s influence loomed large, resulting in an impressive oeuvre consisting of some 700 paintings and 368 prints and posters. He drew his subject matter from the opera, music halls, circuses and brothels of Paris, with a stylistic nod to the Japanese woodcuts that had become all the rage in Europe. Lautrec’s work, however, was quite distinctive, with an economy of line and striking use of color that were the hallmarks of his most memorable creations. Though he died at only 36, Lautrec’s tremendous artistic legacy endures today.
Chrisopher-Clark has long focused on the works of Toulouse-Lautrec, and our collection includes close to 90 of the artist’s poster designs and prints. Below are some of our featured available works by Toulouse-Lautrec.
