Special Exhibition of Richard Diebenkorn & Henri Matisse at SFMOMA

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will be exploring the influence of Henri Matisse on famed California artist Richard Deibenkorn in a special exhibition, Matisse/Diebenkorn, that will run from March 11 through May 29.   It will feature 100 paintings and drawings illustrating the tremendous impact of Matisse’s art upon the evolution of Diebenkorn’s style.  From his expressive figurative works to the signature abstract landscapes such as the “Ocean Park” series, Diebenkorn’s visual dialogue with the work of Matisse resulted in an exceptional oeuvre that led to worldwide recognition and inclusion in numerous leading museums.

Richard Diebenkorn: RED-YELLOW-BLUE

Richard Diebenkorn
RED-YELLOW-BLUE
Original etching, aquatint and drypoint printed in colors on BFK Rives wove paper
1986

We are proud to be featuring one of Diebenkorn’s masterworks of printmaking, “Red-Yellow-Blue.”  This exceptional aquatint with etching and drypoint was created in 1986 and is a highly collectible example of his mature work.  In the words of Kathleen Brown, the founder of Crown Point Press, “I don’t think anyone in history has made color aquatints more beautiful than those of Richard Diebenkorn, and in one short period in 1986 he made three of his most beautiful:  Indigo HorizontalRed-Yellow-Blue, and Green.”
