Brooke Alexander, who was Robert Motherwell’s sole distributor, recalls that in 1974 he and Motherwell’s printmakers, namely Catherine Mousley and Jeffrey Beardsall, encouraged the artist in a completely new direction: monotypes. More akin to drawings and works on paper than to prints, monotypes require an artist to paint on a matrix, generally glass or metal plates, to impress and print upon paper. The result is a completely unique impression on paper. The present work is a beautiful and rare monotype that demonstrates the artist’s masterful mark and eye for color. The work was produced with acrylic paint on a heated plate, the heat a means of holding the paint in place during the transfer from plate to paper. Monotypes by Motherwell rarely appear at auction.
