Prolific artist Frank Stella has produced more than 250 print projects, and approximately 150 of them have been collaborations with master printer Kenneth Tyler at Gemini, Los Angeles, and later at Tyler Graphics, New York. Tyler’s technical virtuosity and penchant for experimentation made him the ideal partner for Stella, whose style has evolved from minimal and restrained in color and form into a riot of color, baroque gesture, and three-dimensionality. Through complex, ambitious printmaking processes, specially formulated inks, and hand-dyed and handmade papers, Tyler and Stella successfully translated the energy of the artist’s painted metal reliefs into several series of prints. Circuits, one such series, is based on the artist’s long-standing interest in car racing, and each print, including the present work Estoril Five I, is named for an international racetrack.
