As one of the most important exponents of figurative realism, Brooklyn-based artist Alex Katz has been painting portraits for nearly 50 years, synthesizing a kind of color field abstraction with realism. Often portraying people from the New York art and intellectual scene, Katz generalizes the features of his subjects and reduces the work to formal properties of light, color and scale, thereby making the faces in his work more familiar to viewers. The present work is from the artist’s Black Dress series, which depicts nine women in the classic Little Black Dress. The life-size women are similarly posed against a yellow background so that the small differences between their various dresses, shoes and hairstyles are made noticeable.
