Coca-Cola Girl 9 is the largest of 9 screenprints included in the series depicting the figure of a woman in a white bathing suit against a radiant red background. As one of the most important proponents of figurative realism, Alex Katz has been painting portraits for nearly 50 years, synthesizing a kind of color field abstraction with realism. Often portraying people from the New York art and intellectual scenes, the artist generalizes the features of his subjects and reduces the work to formal properties of light, color and scale, thereby making the faces in his work more familiar to all possible viewers.
