According to Max Allihn in his book Dürer-Studien (Leipzig, 1871) “The subject (of this etching) is quite clear; it is the old story, told hundreds of times, of the lady in love with her squire, but it is also a protest against the views of the nobility which must have secured for Dürer the applause of the bourgeois circles for which he worked.”
