This monumental piece from 1936 was painted during Manzana’s second visit to Pont-Aven in Brittany, north-west France.  Pont-Aven was a destination for many artists for a number of years, most notably Gauguin.

The traditional costume that the three women are wearing is highly decorative and given Manzana’s interest in both decorative arts and color, these local women became quite a fascination for him.  During his visits in 1928 and 1936 he painted quite a number of pieces but this one is larger than average.
