The beginning of 1953 marked the last period of Picasso’s happy relationship with Françoise and their children Paloma and Claude. Later in the year Picasso was to leave Françoise, but in January he was still relaxing in the circle of family life. His life with Françoise had been one of the calmest stages in his career and had resulted in some of his most purely beautiful works. In early January of 1953 he made a series of studies of his family together – Françoise in the background lying reading, and Paloma and Claude playing in the foreground. Three of the studies were in lithography, and three were etched.
