lithograph
1896

An original Alphonse Mucha lithograph print.

1896

Original lithograph printed in colors on wove paper

Signed on the stone lower left Mucha.

A superb impression of the second variant of the image, in which the 1897 calendar printed in the semicircular base below the figure in the original version has been replaced with an advertisement for Lefèvre-Utile’s vanilla wafers.  Commissioned by Lefèvre-Utile, Paris; printed by F. Champenois, Paris.

Catalog: Rennert/Weill 22, var. 2; Bridges C5.

23 x 17 1/8 inches

One of Mucha’s most personable young ladies, her hair cascading irrepressibly in fine style, is offering a dish of wafers in this exquisite design.  Note the initials “LU” in the upper part of the golden ornamental border that protrudes into the picture at right.  The design of the girl’s dress incorporates sickle and wheat emblems, elements appropriate to the subject matter.
