The theme of the mother with two children, here based on s study of Renoir’s wife with their two children, Claude and Jean, derives from a series of drawings done in the mid to late 1890’s. However, in re-working the concept at this date, some ten to fifteen years later, Renoir has used the marvelous softening of tonality and blending of contour which marks the studies of his later years. The whole work is conceived in terms of light and shade, and the tonality and texture of the lithography is used to enhance this sense of soft visual pattern. It is one of the major works of Renoir’s graphic oeuvre.
