Feuilles, Couleurs, Lumière illustrates Braque’s love for still-life, his Cubist experiments and the influence of Matisse. The flat character, the emphasis on pattern betrays this heritage, while the more conventional silhouette of leaves, flowers and vase are characteristic of his later return to more naturalistic treatment of subject matter. His palette is composed of the least attractive colors but under his brush they take on new character and appeal.
